Perhaps start this effect, along with the suffocation sound, at the 10 mark instead of zero to indicate the oxygen concentration is low enough to be dangerous without it being damaging.

A great idea. A fade-in, fade-out effect along with muffled hearing and sound effects of a struggling breath would greatly add to the immersion of the experience of suffocation in death.
