Suggestion: jump drive fuel for better economy and player interaction

Jump drives are essential for getting around and as such would be a great foundation for player based economy.

In addition to power, jump drives would require a certain amount of fuel depending on the jump distance.

The fuel would only be available in ore found on a select planet, preferably widely present in the topsoil but having a very low yield (this would prevent resource hogging, but also make it difficult to disguise mining operations).

This would produce natural hotspots for player congregation where the ore is present. This concept has been widely proven to work on modded servers, where special ores are usually used for building tiered equipment, and where most conflict is about these.

-Jump drive fuel would be a useful trade commodity for player based economy.

-Jump drive fuel would encourage slow space trucking to not waste fuel.

-Jump drive fuel would drive conflict.

-Jump drive fuel would encourage players to come out of hiding to get fuel. Hiding far away in the vastness of space (as is the norm on most servers) would be less desirable and require significant resources.

Additional points I didn't think of before:

-Jump drive fuel would necessitate landing on planets to mine fuel

-Jump drive fuel would allow a careless player to be stranded in deep space, which would encourage all kinds of taxi and fuel rat services in multiplayer.

Provided this was an optional feature, I'd 100% support it. Anything to make the economy feel more alive!

I agree and maybe I should have mentioned it, but I think it should be a world option.

Of course, the existing jump drives might have to be altered to include conveyor ports out the sides (a great opportunity for Keen to release a paid DLC version with conveyor ports in different spots)

Yet more points:

-The recharge mechanism would be the same, power would be drained when the jump drive is drawing in fuel, or "charging" it, keeping power requirements and the recharging progress essentially the same.

-Jump drive fuel would encourage collaboration. It can be tempting on servers to spawn in space and hide, starting a solo faction instead of joining existing ones. Often one would spawn far out in space because some other player happens to be there, so it almost becomes a vicious circle. Spawn mechnics would have to be tweaked for this so players don't spawn in the middle of nowhere without fuel.

Could be a few more planets than one I think. Maybe one like you described and one wher the ore is in a handful of large deposits deep underground. Gotta have those underground base battles!

It ties the players to the area of the world near the planets, which is a shame.

It gives players a reason to go to planets in the first place. In my opinion, venturing into deep space is even more meaningful when there's a cost to it. I would go as far as increasing the range of jump drives or making recharging a bit faster to compensate for that.

Of course I'd want it to be an optional feature so that those who hate planets and prefer hanging out in empty space could do so freely.
