Strategic Resources or similar

I think that adding planet-specific resources (new ones, not changing rarities of old ones) could give a reason to fight over territory. These could provide powerful buffs e.g. more powerful thrusters, better reactor output etc. The way I suggest they work is this:

  • They are visible from high up (not orbit, but close)
  • They could look like an area of boulders or spikes or something, surrounding a deposit of resource
  • The resource should be infinite but only a trace amount could be extracted at a time i.e. you could extract them by building a special type of drill over them on a station

Currently there is no real reason to fight other that for the fun of it, and adding this gives the bigger factions with more of a PvP focus a reason to fight each other. Also, because of the nature of these resources, people who don't care about them or don't want to fight can ignore them and hopefully be safer from being obliterated, as all the big factions are concentrating on the resource.

You could go absolutely mental with the design of these areas. I've got some suggestions:

  • A deep sinkhole with a glowing centre that destroys ships if they fall in too far
  • A stone field with crystalline spikes jutting out from the ground
  • A large, open cave network with ample room for smaller ships
  • A cracked apart large asteroid that gets harder to navigate through as you approach the centre
  • A deep foggy chasm (conveniently makes use of the weather system)

These kinds of limited resources would be wonderful, if we had more progression to go with it.
