Spacesuit Functionality Idea

Give the option to not wear the suit all of the time at the cost of vertical movement. There's no punishment for not removing the suit, but make it so that there are great advantages to switching back and forth. We don't need Spacesuits on the Earth planet, so the option to take it off wouldn't be that far fetch.

If you introduce something like parkour (just an example) then make the non-spacesuit have exclusive access to those options.

With Spacesuit

Original behavior

Without Spacesuit

Pro- Run faster, Carry more, Faster welding and grinding, Lower energy loss, Body armor (optional)

Con- No air tanks, No Jetpack

I like the general idea of player/suit customization, but I also think there's enough potential within a reasonable amount of development effort to go a lot further than this. Just being able to take off the space suit would be like adding only one new weapon and changing nothing else in a weapons update.

They can a have lot more to go alongside this. They could include "scaffolding" options to make up for the loss of vertical movement. The "scaffolding" could be very fragile compared to more permanent blocks. We already need a "Offset Ladder" to work with the 'Grated Catwalk Half Right/Left'.

They could also introduce a new block that behaves similarly to what Minecraft has with its 'Armor Stands', you can store your suit by simply clicking on the storage without having to be dragged into the customization window and you your armor is displayed in the case (one suit per case)

I can see Builders and Miners being interested in the extra inventory space and more energy provided by losing the suit. By providing more of both, Builders and Miners will be making fewer trips running back and forth delivering supplies that can only be transported by hand.

The Player Character I feel has been neglected to an extent in order to expand on the rest of the game. By providing the option to remove the suit players build styles will adapt to consider the change without access to a jetpack. The ability to equip "Body Armor" that is not available to the Space suit could change the dynamic of base infiltration and encourage even late game players to remove the suit if the situation calls for it.

I'm not exactly sure why we'd need scaffolding blocks when we have ladders, and Medical Rooms already have a space for switching suits, which could easily be stored in the block's inventory.

This is true, but why not go further and make modular suits? We already have a hydrogen-based jetpack, so why not allow people to swap it out with an atmospheric or ionic one? Or just forgo it entirely for additional power, oxygen, or inventory? Why not make magnetic boots into their own item, and allow people to walk on walls or ceilings even with gravity? We could also have, for example, a module that allows you to see the components and contents of a block at a distance, so you don't need to keep running around checking inventories for that one thing you needed. Or a better suit antenna, so you don't have to stick a giant, expensive ship antenna somewhere whenever you want to use a drone. I personally know that it would be very convenient to be able to measure the distance to something that I'm looking at.

Taking off the suit is a good first step, but it's just a first step. While suits are expressly not the focus of the game, I think it is possible to create gameplay options in interesting ways by expanding their uses, in a way which brings new challenges and goals to ship design while also adding more content for the survival mode.
