Remove Conveyor Sorters. Put sorting into inventory blocks directly.
Submitted
Do away with the middleman. Prevent unwanted items in the terminal of each inventory block directly.
A blacklist/whitelist section for the inventory of (not the pass through conveyance) any block that has a hold and would make sense to have it.
(ie: Cargo boxes, refineries, Connectors/Ejectors, Cockpits/Seats, not turrets or tanks).
Filtered blocks would allow items past, but not into its inventory.
I do think sitters still have a place in the game. But with you on the other part.

Heck, keep the sorters too.

Just imagine! A world with per cargo block managed inventory. What a game changer!

Or use scripts. I made a sorting script for my game earlier this week where I can whitelist and blacklist items and have them automatically sorted into their respective inventories.

This would be great to have! Scripts work good, but it's a bit tedious, especially for new players. I don't think this would be that hard to implement either, it just needs to be transferred from the sorter to the other blocks.

I use the sorters as filters for ejecting stone while mining. If this suggestion was to reduce blocks by giving cargo blocks additional capability, it would need a filter for what goes out of a cargo block as well, not (just) what goes in, meaning that a simple contents blacklist/whitelist alone would not suffice. Otherwise I would again have to spend one block to do the sorting alone, and whether I use a sorter block to sort, or a cargo block to sort, I would have to use one block either way.
