Progression tree, plus grind to learn.

I like the progression tree, but I think grind to unlock should also be used in conjunction. I can capture the private sail cargo ship easily without a ship. Just my suit, a grinder and welder... But then I'm stuck with thrusters and a reactor I can't use because I haven't unlocked them yet... It stands to reason an engineer could take something apart and put it back together...

Don't make unlocking an item in a tree unlock the whole row, just if you grind something down and weld it back up, you learn that one thing...

Doesn't hurt progression, because you may still not be at the point you can make the parts for it...

I think the idea can be improved. Blocks for research points, different sizes and properties. Blocks consume energy and resources. The study should take time. Construction of research stations :).

Grind to learn is only possible with a start in space, with a start on a planet there is no NPC to grind (except with mods, I know, but vanilla-speaking)

That would be a good reason to put NPC, and relics artifacts and other things on planets (or IN planets).

Agreed.

Agreed too, planets need some animation.

But maybe it would drive the game toward a more combat-oriented gameplay, which all the player don't want (I am really really bad at combat :D )
