please add weather to planets

Under Consideration

Please add weather effects to the game. I am not talking about rain/fluid water, I am thinking of something like sound and particle effects e.g. for dust storms(you can simulate this by using the particle emitter mod by rexxar and increase the size of the effect). Maybe even add some hazardous gasstorms etc.I know this is a known idea but I think it would really improve the ambience and gameplay. There is a lot you can do with it.

Wind and windmill generators would also been possible then! Would like to have some control panel to control the weather though, (control could be disabled in world settings)

I like it... although I unfortunately think they have WAY bigger issues to tackle at the moment. Though I do hope they get to this.

temperature would be good with heating in ships or stations (heating blocks).

photo

Not to mention cooling. You don't want your ship to explode.

photo

That is available in Stationeers (a separate game by a different dev) although the game itself is quite buggy right now. It also features other things like explosive decompression.

This topic can be pushed far: depending on the planet distance from its host start and planet's day length extremely various conditions can be simulated, e.g. hot winds, or wind speeds that make building on the surface much harder. If planet simulation will get far enough, we could have exotic planets with "rainfalls" of liquid ethanol, melted metals and so on making very hard and expensive to explore these environments. Of course there are much more imminent issues/features to solve first before going so 'wild'.

I will like to see some weather suff as the planets have clouds.

On the other hand it will be kinda tricky to do volumetric effects like real clouds...

Simple storms wind hurricanes and hazards are do able as most of games do this effects "just around player"

Wind turbulences like in LV-1201 (http://avp.wikia.com/wiki/LV-1201) or having Planet like Crematoria (http://thechroniclesofriddick.wikia.com/wiki/Crematoria)

That kind of planets will be quite challenging...

I am still hoping for some hazards like radioactivity emitted from Uranium Ore vein or damaged Reactors that only remote controled welder drones can repair.

Or Heat / Cold hazard (actually doable).

Hello, Engineers!

Planet weather is in its final state for Space Engineers.

Cheers,

What weather!?

'What do you hear Starbuck?'

"Nothing but the... actually nothing, I hear nothing."

He means different terrain like snow etc. representing different biomes I'm guessing.

Clouds are weather-ish. Throw in sun, boom.. Partly cloudy/partly sunny. I've seen that on the weather report at least a few times, KSH can now pat their collective backs on a job well done. Weather... Implemented.

weather?

I think he's referring to the cloud texture..?

im so confused, someone fire whoever is making SE bad

If Empyrion can manage real weather on planets I'm sure SE can.

Here is your daily weather report for Earth_like

Slightly overcast with a chance of zero rain wind will be non-existent in fact any kind of aerodynamics will be completely absent and you can expect some moderate cloud cover

You may also experience some significant orbital bombardment from some flaming rocks although lets be honest most of us turned that rubbish of as it seems to have been implemented in the most boring way humanly possible so rather than providing a challenge that you can out engineer you simply need to cover everything in turrets as far as the eye can see or you will have a permanent moonscape that you cant drive on #gameplay

That concludes today's weather report Tomorrow you can expect the exact same weather report

Non-existent isn't really a state..... One PRO for the devs is that the occlusion of distance geometry and visible grids granted by a storm/ morning fog/mist would probably make the game perform better on certain hardware configurations.

electric storms on Earth that strike and possibly damage ships, voxels, players, or the electric systems in the ship.

Dust storms on Mars that make it hard to see and push small ships with wind.

And the Alien planet could have very bizarre weather, such as wind storms that dissolve blocks slowly and push ships.

That would be great, too bad they declined.

Trenton yes

Absolutely

This would be very cool.

Mars doesn't really have ship-pushing dust storms since the atmosphere is ~1% as strong as Earths and the winds typically don't exceed 60 mph. But the visibility issue is still very real. The dust is electrostatic and binds to surfaces, so it could glue to solar panels or windows/cockpits (relevant real photo below). It also darkens the sky, either way (source).

To make these storms seem more computationally simple, it's worth noting that Martian storms in real life can span the whole planet, so there's no need to necessarily worry about making realistic "jet streams" for the storm to follow -- just turn the whole planet "stormy" at the same time.

@Randy Thompson

Yeah

It's either a missed opportunity, or one of Marek's surprises.

photo

So it's a very well done surprise. For they have already marked the idea as rejected.

I think I will stick with Missed Opportunity since I am allowed to have my own observations and opinions.

Would love to see this too. Right now survival still feels a little too sterile. Adding some things like weather would really help with immersion.

photo

I agree.

A weather system would improve the enjoyment by miles.

The world needs to feel living.

Eveb though no life is encountered the world still needs to be living.

Right bow everything but the player seems to interact with the world. And the world itself is a dead rock :-)

I just wanted to say that that "engineer in snow storm" picture looks brilliant! Where did you get that? Who made it?

photo

It was one of the winning screenshots in a Space Engineers screenshot competition.

Yes, something on this level, the particle system is already in place, but it would feel so much more alive, much more than the wolves in fact.

Having weather would allow for solar panels and wind turbines to change effectiveness with the weather which would be great. Weather would also add a lot of realism to flying your ship with high winds making it more difficult and reducing viability.

Step 1. Wait for someone to do the work for free,

Step 2. Make a couple of minor tweaks so you can claim the credit

Step 3. Profit.
