Missing fundamental and crucial block

I can't imagine this problem hasn't been raised before,.. but we are missing a fundamental block in order to be able to create some pretty basic shapes. After spending over 2 days trying to come up with a work around I'm at my wits' end. There are currently no blocks that are capable of replacing this one. I've added a screen shot to illustrate the block missing in order to complete one of the basic shapes. Its almost like someone created a set of blocks but just forgot about this one. For a building game, I hope you're able to appreciate the important of this. It's not creating something interesting or a challenge but rather making it bloody impossible to make certain builds.
