Make Merge Blocks store grid names
I had this idea the other day when working with a station and a ship, The ship uses a merge blocks as a airtight connection (much like the KSH Blue ships) to connect to the station. However when I disconnect from the station, either the station or the ship, or even both the grid name gets reset to something like "Large Grid 7194".
That's when I came up with the idea of merge blocks storing grid names, or maybe even store action group names as well.
But make sure that if there is more that one merge block, make sure that it waits until all merge block connections have been disabled. I don't need my station being renamed with the ship still connected.
This will make my life so much simpler, my fleet don't really have the space to have connector only star-base docking ports.
Thanks for reading.
I like this idea. Maybe even the remote control block can store this info. As i have station that have escape pods that are part of the station (Whole room is the escape pod)
Also have small ship that look like bridge. That ship transfer stuff by merge blocks (no de-sync issue)
I am tired of all time copy-paste the name (when un-merge stuff) for antenna show it correctly (not that random generated).

adding to this thought, you could make the grid name stored with the merge block itself, in custom data or something you can have it default to a name if the merge block is ever used... whichever grid has the largest block count names the grid, and once separated the info saved in the merge block can be what names the split grids. +1.

In the meantime, I use Isy's Renaming script to rename the grid. I use a timerblock to disconnect and run the script at the same time (last). Works for me np.
I would prefer your idea (cough non-experimental, cough) though.

Very much yes. Sure, at least for connections using connectors there are colours, but add a sack of rotors to the mix and the terminal starts looking like an explosion in a unicorn factory and adds exactly nothing to helping with finding the right one, in particular since you cannot SORT by colour (vulgo: ships and ship sections). So, any elements that aid in recognising part association would be appreciated.

I strongly support this idea- there's a number of ways to go about it, but having to rename my ship every time I dock it is a pain. I avoid activating the merge altogether sometimes just so I don't need to deal with the renaming.

i think this idea is great. but i would like to set the name in the grids main control seat (or remote control).

I would love to see this as a checkbox for merge blocks. Just call the option "Smart Unmerge". Enabling that will make the blocks remember the names of their original grids and reapply them. As a bonus feature, have the blocks also remember what other blocks were merged as a result of them connecting, and unmerge them as well. That would be a great feature.
