Linux Dedicated Server Support

Considered (Not Planned)

Linux is the goto hosting platform for the overwhelming majority of server hosts, the reason being that it's simply easier to use in the context of server hosting. Most of the people I know that do host servers use a linux based platform and the fact that Keen hasn't built a server distribution for it is relatively surprising. I'm not asking for the client to be rewritten to run on linux, just that we have access to a headless linux server release. Also, before anyone posts a link for the guide to get the windows version running on linux, I would like to point out that said guide no longer works with the current version of the game due to the x64 transition.

Hello, we are sorry but we dont plan this feature for SE1.

That's to bad. I think it was a good idea to develop a server system to create a hole Universe where players could pass from one server to another using warps between solar systems. Combined with the idea where you (KEEN) supports users having servers (https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/general/topic/idea-for-private-server-funding) both having a win-win side, it could be an amazing gaming Universe!

I can understand from the viewpoint of the games engine and background, that this is a pretty heavy task and just adds unnecessary work for the developers.

But I can imagine that using and working with linux stuff could clear up some things pretty good and might help with adjusting, fixing and optimizing perfomance of the game in general.

There are often workarounds in windows, or some layers ontop, while in linux you might use the "core" of it and gain much better knowledge of how things work and in general the perfomance gets also better by not having unnecessary dependencies/layers that might even not be used or needed at all.

The only thing that currently works(worked?) to get space in linux would be wine, but for server hosting this is not the good way and it would also need a lot of fiddling around to get it working.

As I heard the reason for this was licenses and general compatibility problems with linux.

Any chance that Keen has started work on this?

I'm certainly not about to pay Microshaft tax to run a dedi server. Seems a bit backwards if you want dedicated servers to be hosted anywhere.

As this topic is 3 years old I was wondering if there were any updates on future plans on this?

Trying to get a SE server up just now, has reminded me of just how much of a hassle it is to run it on Windows. Even just the cost of a Windows license for a dedicated server is more than what I pay for my linux VM, and having to run a separate VM exclusively for SE is a massive disadvantage.

I realize this would be a considerable amount of work, but a completely headless server running through steamcmd would already be a huge improvement.

Hello, why is there no Linux server? It's a pity in this day and age, and I don't understand it. The only option seems to be with Wime, but there's no complete and accurate tutorial. It's such a shame.
