being able to build small blocks directly on big blocks
so you can build very compact, like big doors or fighter bay rising from the ground
large grids can be given a unique design
people would start building smaller and more compact, with more functions for the square feet

being able to do this directly on the large blocks would make smart traps possible without losing too much space and many more

Yeah this has been suggested long, long ago. No doubt the answer to this one will be a no, as it has been for ages past.

With improved collisions in progress, a dedicated 'large-to-small' adaptor instead of using hinges/rotors as we have to currently should be viable. To avoid the complexity argument that KaiiKiller points out, perhaps subgrid block count could be limited per adaptor block?
