[Idea] Rework welding (hear me out)
I always thought the construction of SE was too easy. I think it would add challenge, and make high end tech rewarding. The one simple change, would be to add different components in different spots on different blocks. For simple blocks like armor, you could just aim your welder anywhere to add the plates and grids. But for more complicated blocks, you could have different hit boxes in the different build stages, for different components.
So you set the frame for the assembler and put the construction components in this quadrant of the block, and then add the computer components in this other section of the block, and then the pipes to the back section. You could even make it just buildable from every face still, but just have different areas, or different patterns of areas on that face for each component. The higher tier or more functional the block, the more complicated it could be. Even 3 different areas to put it together would increase the immersion a bit and add some gameplay.
And then this would also incentivize building ship welders, which can hit wider areas, and the gameplay of building/designing a good welding ship/bay. Maybe have small ship welders have a reduced version of this mechanic, or just wider areas, so it's much easier/likely they hit those areas. And then have large ship welders just work anywhere so long as it connects with the block.
Could do similar for grinding, and add a chance at botching the component into scrap metal if grinding the wrong spot.
small grid components can be hard enough to target as it is. don' t you ever find your self wiggling forward and backwards wiggling your cursor trying to get that awkward small block to catch?
A chance to scrap would be very sensible.. 100% collection of parts is very unrealistic considering we are dismantling with a grinder. Batteries already do this. so it is possible.

i like the idea of a welding/grinding "minigame"... But I can also see the not so fun part of welding 100+ block with a fucking minigame... or welding with a LG welder and just being able to hit a corner of a block, but none of the minigame points...
It feels like a good thing to add, but maybe only to advanced blocks? like medbay, reactor, etc.?

I originally though that could be a great idea, as well!
But then I remembered some videos I saw (anticipated) of that game that looks some Mars´s survival, in which the player has to fix those circuit panels plates.... and also Mass Effect 2, in which you have to connect the electric board point to hack the locks... and so I think it would turn things too much difficult in SE.
