Angle of stripes on hazard skin

Hello,
I was super impressed (in disappointing way :P) when had realized that stripes on hazard skin are not at 45 degree angle. This automatically makes it useless with blocks which do not have left/right versions, like for example some plates. If you want to decorate sides of gate, good luck doing this in symmetrical way. :| Am I missing something here?
