Hydrogen gas cell blocks
Not to be condused with hydrogen fuel cells.
What they would be: Lightweight blocks coming in various sizes. I'm thinking mainly 3x3x3, 3x3x1, and 5x5x3. Large grid and small grid. They would be light metallic frames containing canvas-based bags. They would be conveyored on all sides (in case of the cuboid ones) or on their flat sides (in case of the flat shaped ones).
What would they do: They would be the central component of airship-like contraptions. They would generate constant, energy-free lift based on atmospheric density around them, as long as they are filled with hydrogen. If you mess up, they would re-enact the Hindenburg incident.
How would they work:
Each gas cell block would function as a H2 tank. Albeit, with a much lower capacity than actual hydrogen tanks, since those store the gas in liquid form, while these blocks would store it as a gas. Like other H2 tanks, the gas cell blocks would also have a "Stockpile" option. The lift generated could be finely controlled by moving the hydrogen gas between the gas cell block and normal hydrogen tank by enabling stockpiling on one and disabling it on the other.
Potential use cases:
Flying bases, laser antenna relays, sub-orbital defense platforms, long-range atmospheric flight, building a Kirov Airship to bomb that pesky SPRT.Stronghold into oblivion.
Justification for a sci-fi setting:
- Aerostatic devices are used to this day, such as weather baloons, spy baloons, and it is not likely to change in the future.
- It would be cool.
Gameplay advantages:
- Cheap
- Low-tech
- Would not require energy
- An interesting use for the currently underutilized Canvas component
Gameplay disadvantages:
- Bulky
- Explosive
- Lift generated is easily surpassed by proper thrusters
