Make true battery banks rather than reskinned batteries.
The battery bank is good idea. But as it sits, it's just a facade. What would be helpful would be a battery system where the player could transport and install up to five physical battery banks into a unit and do so manually; carrying each bank in the avatar's inventory and then depositing the banks in a block frame that pulls energy from the banks.
The system would consist of a:
Battery bank block
Battery bank items
Battery bank charger block.
Battery banks would be manually carried and deposited in the charger and charged up. The banks could then be stored or carried by player. The player could then, at will, add banks to the Battery-Bank Block or replace empty battery banks with charged ones... taking the empties to the charger to recharge.
The battery bank would work well in starter vehicles where any number of banks may be included to limit the supply of power initially available. The player may build his own charger or the scenario could allow the player to charge banks at an NPC station with the charge set to "Everyone." This would be safe for the station as no more than the maximum number of power banks could draw from the station rather than the power load of an entire ship.
Battery banks would be great for small vehicles that never have to be docked and connected to the players' other grids. Banks could be added and replaced.
Players could charge a set of battery banks while using another to run a miner or other small ship, avoiding idleness while a typical battery charges.
Battery banks blocks could serve as emergency power for larger grids. For example, enough power to run a conveyor system. Or a bucket brigade system to charge a jump drive or battery on a stranded ship.
