Apex Seeds planting from toolbar

Under Consideration

Hey Keen,

I love the apex update but after several days I have found the interface of seeding plots a bit sloppy. Mainly the amount of time it takes. As I do understand the idea of not automating this I would like to make planting a bit less of a drag.

Who the possibility of making it so you can place seed packs on your toolbar and then plant said seed via pressing the number of the tool slot. You still have to have the seed pack in your inventory and you still have to physically plant to the plot, but this would make it a bit less clunky and more enjoyable!

Harvesting can be automated, I have 4 rows of 8 planters each row. 2 pistons and 4 collectors gather with ease. 2 timer blocks to extend and retract every 5 minutes for the various growth times.

I have no issue with the planting process.

I know harvesting can be automated, i play the same game you do, i am informed. You dont need to come in here and tell me the basics like i never played the game before.

My only beef is with the manual process taking a lot of keys, clicks and time.

If you already know the basics then there would have been no reason to have made your initial post. Your a little touchy on suggestions by the way.

Sure, harvesting can be automated, but manual harvesting and planting is simply annoying and frustrating.

There are a few things wrong with the UX here, mainly:

  • When pressing "Plant", the planting window should close automatically
  • The planting window should not show items other than seeds
  • The planting window should allow confirmation using Enter (related to the next two points)
  • The planting window should have the "Harvest" button pre-selected when something is ready to harvest, to allow confirming the action with "Enter"
  • The planting window should have the last used seed and the "Plant" button pre-selected, allowing planting the last used seed by simply pressing "Enter"

The UI can definitely be done better. When planting, you don't care about other items in your inventory and the info screen is not really useful then either (unless it shows power and irrigation state, which I believe it does not).

When interacting with a plot with crop, your inventory items aren't important at all.

But really, planting and harvesting should not require the use of a UI in the first place. It's nice to have it for feedback and debugging purposes, but planting and harvesting really should be as easy as a single click. (See my tool suggestion below)

Hello Engineer,

Thank you for reaching out on our forum.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback on the UI and the Farm Plot interaction. We understand your concerns about the extra steps involved and your suggestion to streamline the process. However, the current behavior is working as intended and was designed to support broader gameplay systems.

To ensure that your feedback is properly reviewed by our programmers and designers, we will be moving this thread to the Feedback section of the forum, where all feedback and ideas are stored.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping us make Space Engineers better.

Kind regards,

One option to improve the farming aspect of SE is to add the seeds/spores as a tool, with the items as ammunition. That way planting can be done by just selecting the crop you want to plant in your hotbar and clicking the empty plots you want to plant in. It's more immersive than the UI too.

Harvesting should be as easy as harvesting the wild crops. Once fully grown, allow players to just click the crop to harvest them (perhaps with empty hands only). It should probably show the crop's health though as that's the only thing not otherwise visible when harvesting. (Plants still heal when fully grown and watered)

Uprooting crops should require the use of a hoe tool, unless the crop is already dead.

Wish it would be as simple as

1.PUT SEED IN TOOLBAR,

2.CLICK EMPTY PLANTER WITH SEED > SEED PLANTED

3. NEXT ONE

As for harvesting. SHIFT RIGHT CLICK or something = HARVESTING as long as you look at the "ground" part of the farming plot
