Editing NPC faction via the UI or ModAPI truncates its tag

Using either the UI or the MyAPIGateway.Session.Factions.EditFaction(...) ModAPI function to edit an NPC faction (to for example set the Private Info) results in the faction tag being truncated to 3 characters.
If the game is then saved with this truncated tag, and it is a predefined (e.g. SPRT) or modded (e.g. ASSERT) faction, the NPC faction is re-created on the next reload. However, the owning NPC identity is added to the re-created NPC faction without removing it from the broken NPC faction, and anything that was owned by this NPC identity when the game was saved continues to show the broken NPC tag.
