Large grid drills working area

hi all, why is the working area of large grid drills not relatively proportionate to small grid drills? In fact, with a small grid ship i can dig with left mouse button, collect ores and easily pass through the excavated tunnel however, with a large ship the excavated tunnel is not big enough for the ship to pass through. Is this a bug or is it wanted by the developers?
