Extend Creative Design Techniques to Survival Using Projectors

It is hard to design ships in survival. You can only place one block at a time and have no way of judging the final product other than imagining it. The process is slow and once you get onto bigger sections and ships mistakes require massive amounts of time to correct.

It is easy to design ships in creative. Mirror mode, line/plane building as well as copy/paste allow massive ships to be created and destroyed at a whim. mistakes can be made, removed, and remade efficiently.

THE ISSUE: On multiplayer servers multiple people usually cant participate in the design of a ship. This would require a second server just for creative mode, and even then the construction would not be made in context to the other creations of the survival server. Once imported it may not fit with, into, around, or on preexisting creations.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: Allow the projector block to act like an editable canvas. Creative mode functions such as mirror are enabled to allow the projections to be modified quickly, and the individual blocks can be built at the player's leisure. This can also work to give player's shipyards and hangars an extra function, and allow multiple players to design a ship in their own creative world. If block permissions are set, this can be used to restrict who can and cannot edit, and in PVP a design weakness could be used as sabatoge...

This is 10 months later but could you clarify that you mean projectors get a new mode to allow you to edit the projection by placing blocks on it?

Sounds to me exactly like that.

Yep thats the idea.

Looking at it now it would also help when the server doesnt allow specific blocks or you dont have the dlc. That way you can still use the blueprints but fill in the blanks yourself before you build.

I just make stuff in creative mode. Get a design in happy with, test it a bunch, and blueprint and print it up in survival.

Wish you could project sub-grids, though... Soooooo limiting.

Alboridian is right of course... but some of us like the idea of building on the fly in survival. it feels more immersive that way. you have to solve the problem on your own rather than getting a blue print from the workshop or from your own collection of perfection.

Subgrid projections and welding solved: Multigrid Projector

It is interesting that I found this ticket now, because I had the same idea of using the projector (or the console block, aka "hologram table") as a multiplayer editable canvas. It would also add support for saving the edited blueprint, certainly.

The properties of the projected blocks may not be editable, however. I'm not sure it is doable, since the preview blocks in the projection are disabled.

There is also the question of how to properly "target" blocks inside the projection. Maybe navigating between blocks by keypresses in addition to looking at them would help.

I came here to submit exactly this feedback/suggestion for the game. A direct port of the Creative Mode tools into dealing with projected blocks in Survival would be awesome. It would make the design process of Survival ships much more sensible. I'd imagine it's also a lot easier onboarding for new players as well - the game flow of exiting and starting a Creative world in order to experiment is non-obvious.
