these can remotely control the ship they can be repelled by firewalls or not having the right adapter

There essentially is that ability with old scripts/mods using the programmable block (computer). However, scripts cause much server/game overhead so they are not used as much by the MP community. I also think Keen marked scripting as Experimental so you have to enable it. Not turned on by default. The other part is it was rare to find a server with users running virus attacks against ships so it seemed like only a small niche of users were into that form of PVP.
