Hand drill should mine into pocket

When mining with the hand drill the mined substance should immediately be transferred into the pocket instead of dropping as ore chunks.

For once it is a completely useless form of lag for the server, and for second: if anyone else on the server is using an ejector you can no longer mine by hand, because the chunks immediately disappear before you can even pick them up.

I hate to agree with this one, but I am. I've been playing Space Engineers for a long time and one of my favorite challenges early on was trying to find nice ways to collect and transport all that free floating ore. My favorite was a gravity box that would confine ore into a center region while pulling it into a collector. Aw, man was that a sight to see!

But yeah... I can see why it would be problematic on servers. So I've added my vote. Maybe make it an option, though.

I remember I use to build gravity generator basket to capture floating rock, but this does not work well anymore as the ore floating lose gravity physic behavior quite fast now and for some reason the collector was not always collecting properly either, some ore were getting stuck on it not collected increasing probability of clang event.

I so agree with the OP about the impossibility to hand drill when there is a lot of player creating floating object which make them disappear quite fast, this has been a real annoyance on public server.

We're probably describing the same or very similar set ups. I used 4 gravity generators to pull asteroids into a center "beam" and then another generator to pull them towards collectors along that beam. It was fun.

But, yeah... that's not where the game is today.

As annoying as it can be, gonna have to disagree. I think its fun on planets to dig out a "ditch" to catch all those rocks and then mine in a way so that they all fall into the ditch for easy collection.

Did you miss the part where that is literally impossible on a server if anyone else is using ejectors? I'm 1000% sure Keen thinks this was fixed by making stone refine-able (nobody is going to refine stone if they don't have to.)

Stone was always refinable. Its just that it's product (gravel) was useless except when building reactors and people always had way too much of it if they collected stone. And, I don't know about on planets, but in space I plan on collecting the stuff. It's an easy way to get all of the common ores in any location all at once instead of having to fly to them individually. I haven't evaluated the rate of production yet, though. And of course all that gravel is still going to be pretty useless. They really need to add concrete blocks.

I don't think you fully understand that some of us don't care to use mods that may or may not break every update. I would much rather see keen make a good game than rely on

modders to do what they couldn't (or wouldn't)

Well, I don't expect Keen to do this one. It counters their quest, and allot of players requests, for immersion. Its grindy, but some people like it.

And allot of the simple mods hardly ever break. Easy inventory and Auto ore pickup haven't needed update is over a year.

To each their own, though. Just thought the link would help some who like the idea in this thread.

I'm just saying, "modders already did that" is not a valid argument against Keen implementing something into the stock game. By that logic, why update the game at all?

I think they should change the tools from hand-held like a power drill to connected to your inventory like a backpack mounted vacuum (via a tube or something). Hand-held grinders and welders already act like that, unlike the drill, they immediately transfer components around. I don't see the character manually putting components to weld on blocks, nor do I see the character grind blocks down then pick up the components. Surely they can change a few lines of code from "spawn ores on ground" to "put the ore into inventory, until full, then spawn ores on ground" just like the grinder. They could probably copy most of the lines from the grinder.

I have a better idea: leave the starting drill the same, but make improved drills with this gathering ability (t2 or t3 ones). This will make sence as a progression.

There is still the problem that there is a limit of game objects that can float around at any given time. Imagine you are dismantling your reactor and completely forgot to remove the 200 uranium. No problem, because you can simply pick them up, right? Nope, because somewhere at the other end of the universe Hans is using his drill and just deleted your uranium with his drops.
