Lets have a connector you can also walk through. I mean this is what real ships in space have. "shuttle to space station"

Preferably a 2x1 with a connector directly above/below/to the side, so the ships can be 'docked' without being merged.

a really simple solution is to reuse most of the artwork and functionality for the existing connector. replace the cargo flap with a selectable window. If there is a secure connection, selecting the window will teleport the Engineer into the interior of the other connector. Should also have an emergency egress mode which causes depressurization.
