Viagra is a drug that is mostly used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Its main ingredient is sildenafil citrate. When a man is sexually excited, it helps him get and keep an erection that is good for sexual behavior by sending more blood to the penis. When a man is sexually aroused, Viagra stops the action of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), an enzyme that breaks down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the penis. By stopping PDE5, Viagra raises cGMP levels. This causes smooth muscle cells in the penile vessels to relax, which brings more blood to the penis. This makes an erection happen.

It's important to know that Viagra doesn't make you want to be sexual or give you an erection on its own. It only works when you are sexually aroused. People usually take Viagra by mouth 30 to 60 minutes before they get sexual. It can work for up to 4 to 6 hours. People who don't need to use Viagra for ED sometimes do so to treat other conditions, like pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and altitude sickness. But it's very important to only take Viagra or any other medicine as your doctor tells you to.

Can Women Have Erectile Dysfunction?

Yes, women can have sexual dysfunction. This can show up in many ways, such as low sexual desire, problems with pleasure or orgasm, and pain while sexually active. A lot of research has been done on male sexual dysfunction, especially erectile dysfunction, and there are effective treatments for it. But female sexual dysfunction is more complicated and not as well known. It can be brought on by medical and physical conditions, changes in hormones, and mental health issues. Different types of treatments are available for female sexual dysfunction, such as changing medications, hormone therapy, and counseling. But it's important to talk about your worries and see a doctor so that you can get the right evaluation and treatment.
