Hand drilling and Depth of Field is broken

When hand drilling is 1st person, the tip of the drill is perfectly in focus.
Why is the ore that the drill touching blurred as though it is too close to be in focus? Backing away brings the ore into focus but now the drill cannot touch it, why?
