Add height above ground level (radar altimeter) like SE1
SE1's altimeter shows height above ground which is much more valuable when flying and could be justified as a radar altimeter.
I'm not even sure what altitude means in SE2. What is the reference point for zero altitude? On Earth it's mean sea level, but even there the meaning of "altitude" is complicated. GPS uses a mathematical model of earth and uses mean sea level to average tides and wave heights. Aircraft use pressure (probably most valuable when using atmospheric engines in SE).
To add in some engineering, how about requiring a sensor block to be on the grid for that feature? It could even be "aimed" so that a sensor block on the front of the craft could alert for distance to an object in front of the ship. This would allow scripters to write scripts to assist a ship in doing ore detecting grid searches and give us a limited form of radar "distance to target" measurement (valuable when approaching an asteroid in space).
I'm not finding altitude very useful while a measurement of height above ground level (AGL) is much more valuable to avoid crashes and to allow ships to attempt to maintain a particular level when scanning for ore.
