Did the hand drill get nerfed?

With 2.4 I could drill a hole to some ore, turn around and relatively easily fly back out. With 4.0 I am constantly being blocked, Did the ground clearing radius get reduced? Did the engineer hit box grow slightly larger?
Regardless of what happened, hand drilling seems more difficult and much more irritating.
