Contract problem - Palatine Base

It could be just me but,
I took the contact to build up an asteroid base. There is a platform with cargo, a smelter and a gearforge, roughly 2300 PCU.
The task is to build, within the designated cube 4 batteries, 4 2.5 cargo containers, 2 smelters, 2 assemblers and a connector using no more than 1800 PCU. All is well until I mess up and decide to load a backup.
The game decides that the original platform is now in the build cube so I have 2 grids and a PCU usage of 2400+ PCU. I doesn't tell me that I have failed and I haven't tried to complete thee remaining blocks to see what happens. All of the backups show the same agglomeration of grids?
Is it just me of has anyone else seen something like this?
