Inertial dampening prioritizes horizontal movement over vertical causing frequent crashes
So I found myself hitting a bug I frequently ran into in the first Space Engineers in game 2 now. I was carrying a lot of ore, and had a little trouble taking off, like the engines could only barely lift the weight, but they were able to lift me vertically and then keep me hovering there, so I figured I was safe to accelerate.
I accelerated forward up to 500kp/h no problem but when I let off the accelerator my ship just fell out of the sky. I was able to take off and fly no problem but I guess the ship couldn't slow down AND have enough power to hold me up at the same time so it slowed down while also disabling the downward thrusters completely. There was nothing I could do but just die.
This is an insanely frustrating issue that I’m really not happy to see seems to have followed me from the first game where it happened all the time. I assume because the same code was used. I’ve complained about this multiple times but each time people told me it wasn’t a bug and it was by design.
But to me, the inertial damping logic should NEVER take power away from the thrusters holding the ship in the air to slow down. It leads to a stupid unavoidable crash every single time.
The ship seemed to have more than enough power to hold itself in the air. And it had the power to quickly accelerate 500kp/h no problem. So I don’t understand why it had enough power to stay in the air while rapidly accelerating but didn’t have enough power to stay in the air while decelerating. That doesn’t make any sense to me. That should take exactly the same amount of power.
Additionally I did some more testing and turned off the inertial damper mode and then I couldn’t get in the air at all. So I think something is wrong with the inertial damper logic that lets the ship produce more thrust then it’s actually capable of when inertial dampers are on, except when decelerating when suddenly it realizes the error and produces less or maybe the normal insufficient thrust and falls out of the sky.

I have noticed this also. Whether in a grid or just a suit. Inertial Dampers do seem to struggle alot when close to the ground, maybe around 500m at less. I have found I also need the dampers on to even move upwards, then turn off when about 1km high, where in SE1 you could turn them off and fly upwards. I'm assuming the calculations are off for the gravity compensation.
