Welding Fails When Player or Grid Inventory Is Full (Invisible Staging Buffer Issue)

Reproducible: Yes (intermittent but consistent under certain conditions)

Summary:

Welding stops functioning when either the player inventory or the grid inventory is full. The welder produces sparks but does not apply components or progress the block. Dropping ore or freeing inventory space immediately restores welding functionality. This behavior is not documented and did not occur in earlier builds.


Steps to Reproduce:

Fill the player’s backpack to maximum capacity (especially with silicon or mixed ores).


Fill the grid’s cargo containers or approach near‑full capacity.


Attempt to weld any block using the hand welder or area welder.


Observe that sparks appear, but no welding progress occurs.


Drop any ore (iron works reliably) to free one inventory slot.


Attempt welding again — welding now works normally.


Expected Behavior:

Welding should apply components directly to the block even when inventory is full, or the game should provide a warning message explaining that welding requires free inventory space.


Actual Behavior:

Welding silently fails with no error message. Sparks appear, but no components are applied and no progress is made. Freeing inventory space immediately resolves the issue.


Additional Notes:

Issue appears related to the welder’s internal “staging buffer” failing when inventory is full.


Silicon ore seems more likely to trigger the issue, possibly due to stacking behavior.


The issue can also occur after switching welders or carrying both welders, but inventory fullness appears to be the root cause.


Reloading the save also resolves the issue temporarily.


System:

Survival, single‑player, standard settings.

It's intermittent, experienced it twice last night over four hours. I'll see if I can capture it, but it takes a while to happen.

Though from a debug perspective, I'm not sure what a video will provide that my description above doesn't describe, unless this is an issue of 'I don't believe you'. It happens at random, I was building this ship: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3707142225 and a couple times during the welding process, it simply would not consume raw materials that were present in my backpack when the materials are ones (such as steel plate trying to weld a block of light armor) that I know for certain can be ore only welded. The above example was one, i.e. with a couple thousand iron ore in my backpack, I could not weld a light armor block, until I went to my cargo container and got one steel plate. After that steel plate was consumed, the rest of the block welded normally with iron ore. It wasn't confined to one block, once it happened I couldn't weld any block on multiple grids until I unstuck it by picking out one refined resource (steel plate) as described above...until it happened again, then repeat the fix.

I've been trying to duplicate this in a new game, wondering if this might require the area welder to trigger the condition. Once it happens, both the regular welder and area welder have the same problem, but at least so far I can't make it happen with just the regular welder. I'll keep trying.

Since the latest update / patch I have had the same issue. I was building a base on an asteroid near Kemik when I was able to place some half blocks and some stairs with just iron ore in my backpack but when I went to weld them up I was unable to get any further. I grabbed some steel plate and was suddenly able to weld up again.

Later I was unable to even get the initial build state for the half blocks with ore and had to use steel plates. Also I'm not sure if its supposed to be like this now but I can only weld lights with construction components not ore.

This issue happens with both area welder and normal welder.

Yep, same here. I haven't figured out a set of steps to make it happen reliably. If anyone else runs into it and can capture a video, awesome.

I just found out its not just ships its for everything i just tryed weld a cargo on my base if i am 100% full it dont let me weld nothing

if you weld from resources (ex:iron), you need some place to put the parts (ex: armor block)

Does it do the same when welding from parts?

When you weld from ore, you actually make the part then weld it. I think that's the issue. I'm not sure if it should be tho, as if the part exists, its ore certainly does not anymore.

I think it should be reviewed and fixed.

they should only allow us to hold 98% ore so it has room to make the parts yea it needs to be fixed

Okay, steps established, note to Bartosz. This issue here is also reported in this one: https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers2/pc/topic/53758-blue-print-welding

In that ep there was feedback about ore only welding failing when your backpack is at 100%. I tested it and confirmed this is the behavior I've observed in this report. If your backpack is maxed out (full of iron ore, for example), you can't weld things that require iron ore (for example) in that state. I was observing a 'fix' for this by grabbing a single plate, which required me to dump an amount of the ore. Then I welded a single plate, leaving exactly enough room to create another plate in the inventory, which at that point unblocks the ore welding completely.

So the root cause here appears that the backpack building from ore cannot work unless there is enough room in the inventory to make a single refined unit of the component you're needing 'first' in your weld. If that's a steel plate, then you need one steel plate's room in your inventory along with the ore to weld 'thing' needing steel plate. Same for other components. Probably need to work out a fix still as that's unexpected behavior certainly.

Your backpack is full, you cannot weld/build items automatically when there is no space left.

Hello Engineers,


It seems that if the Character's inventory is at 100%, Hand Welder will not work in Raw Mode, however, welding using components should still be possible. Additionally I could not reproduce this using Grids as Welder Blocks work exclusively in Component Mode.

I have reported the issue with Hand Welder and attached this thread to our internal ticket (SE2-32517).

I also tested in another world shared by a Participant on the Setam SE2 Forum, and it is the same Bug.

I can't build projected blocks with normal character hand welder when my character inventory is full load with red warning blinking in lower left corner of the screen.

The problem, I think, is linked to welding from Ore, where the game wants to push the item in your backpack before using it like a normal welding.

This does not make logical sense to me. If I were, here, to create something with the need to use it right away, I would not store it before using it, I would use it right away.

The ore welding will have to piggy back a bit later in the standard welding method 😉

Yeah, I'm having the same problem though I have noticed at least when I run into this problem I haven't noticed it mattering to replicate the issue. Just simply dropping anything or moving anything no matter how small - the "MUST" in order for welding to start ocurring again is you cannot have a completely full backpack or suit / whatever... even if you only drop 1 small item that weighs veritably nothing it will still start welding again - which has been my experience as I've played around with it to analyze what was going on as that's part of my job in the computer industry - so I was messing around and found it doesn't matter - just make sure your backpack is not in the red or reading full.. and you can weld no problema...

i work around it by removing 20 to 50kg of do its not 100 percent full

Perhaps a "hidden buffer" where the material is stored during welding up a block would help. As in, when building from ore the newly created component sits in limbo until it is welded to the block. Only then, the ore is removed from the backpack.

i think NOT being able to weld if your inventory is full and no components are used to do the job is fine.


but if the issue IS that there ARE useable components NOT ore that is being turned into usuable components then a "hidden buffer" just turns the packpack engineering system into "magic" which it isnt and shouldnt be.


unless its eventually decided that the amount of base ore to create a common component is less than the amount of the component itself (reasonable because 100% efficiency is a dream of modern science) then fair enough.
