Cannot weld anymore (Classic Survival Start)

A few minutes into starting the new Classic Survival Start I came across a set of circumstances where I cannot weld anymore blocks at all. Whether I start a new Object or try to weld up my existing structure does not seem to make a difference. The only things I have done in this play through are:
1. Dug 3 holes in the voxel ground, One over Iron ore, to reach it
2. Placed a small Light armor block platform to build on
3. Began welding it up
4. received a brief error message that was too fast for me to see and now Nothing in my entire world welds up anymore.
