Darkening in dust storms

Dust storms put you in complete darkness (at least at night). I understand that the sun and distant light are dimmed or even invisible. But nearby lights and especially the astronaut head light should still brighten the scene. In fact the dimming should depend on the distance the light has to travel through the dust cloud.
