Camera should have have light sensing switch function

I was going to suggest a light level sensing switch, but knowing how things go in SE I thought that the default optical sensor would end up being the camera.
So could the camera possibly have a light level switch function that could be used to trigger another device.
If not could thing be another function for the sensor.
If not could it be part of a new physics sensor.
Solar panels are too big to use inside of a structure as light sensors.
Normal SE1 sensors are based on proximity. There could be conditions where proximity detection is not the desired method.
It could be that moving through the darkness is part of the experience and using lights would trigger an alarm.
