Suggestion: Tiered, Upgradable Equipment Without Block Replacement

I’d like to suggest a system for tiered equipment upgrades (such as engines, refineries, assemblers, reactors, etc.) that does not require removing and replacing blocks on ships or stations.

Instead of swapping entire blocks, core functional blocks could support in-place upgrades through components, modules, or an internal tier system. For example:

  • A basic refinery could be upgraded to higher tiers by installing advanced components or research unlocks.
  • Each tier would improve performance (efficiency, speed, power usage, output) while keeping the same physical block.
  • Upgrades could require materials, time, power, and possibly specialized upgrade blocks or tools.

Benefits:

  • Encourages long-term ship and station progression instead of rebuild-heavy gameplay.
  • Reduces frustration and downtime when upgrading large or complex constructions.
  • Supports immersion—realistically, advanced machinery is upgraded, not torn out and replaced wholesale.
  • Makes early-game builds feel meaningful and worth investing in.
  • Adds depth to logistics, resource management, and tech progression.

Optional Extensions:

  • Upgrade limits based on grid size or tech level.
  • Trade-offs between tiers (e.g., higher output but more heat or power draw).
  • Visual changes or subtle animations as tiers increase.
  • Compatibility with automation or future research systems.

I think this approach would fit Space Engineers 2’s focus on engineering, creativity, and realism while improving quality of life for both survival and large-scale builders.

Thanks for considering!
