I did some experimenting in creative mode to figure out thruster specs, but it went not so swimmingly. Consider the attached files:
"Ship Mass 1" shows the initial build, with a mass of 17160 kg.
"Ship Mass 2" shows a build with a total of two added thrusters (one up, one down), mass is still displayed as 17160 kg.
For "Ship Mass 3" the two extra thrusters were removed and four new ones slapped on an armor block, for a total of four thrusters more than in the original build. Mass is now given as 17293 kg.
Weight calculation seems to be broken.
I have the same bug
Addendum: I just opened the saved file again and now the mass of the third build is given as 17403 kg. I made no new screen shots though.

I can confirm that. My bug report about the same problem.

I didn't want to submit a ticket on more or less the same subject sooo...
After testing, it seems that replacing one “large” armor volume with many smaller armor blocks creates a much heavier structure, even when the small-block version is hollow.
I’ve also noticed that if I save a blueprint of the ship I’m working on, the reported weight changes compared to the WIP version, almost as if the blueprint is forcing a recalculation and showing the more “official” mass.
Is this intentional? Right now it feels like small armor pieces are paying a major mass penalty for added shaping/detail, which makes them hard to justify for anything except cosmetics, especially since each individual block would already be weaker based on its component value.
If needed I can cause the same issue to happen again, and record the steps.
