Character inventory "Block Slot" for detaching and attaching blocks
In addition to regular inventory slots, there should be a special Block Slot that can carry any one block regardless of size or weight.
This allows detaching a block, storing it in the Block Slot, and attaching it to a grid from the Block Slot.
Detach would be a special operation of grinder tool, that moves block from world into inventory Block Slot.
Attach would be a special operation of welder tool, that moves block from Block Slot into the world at chosen placement. Placement works just like building, but instead of a hologram, the complete block shows up.
More than one Block Slot is a possibility but for realism reasons I would limit it to a single Block Slot unless a need for more becomes apparent.
Why?
- Easily grab blocks from found ships and stations to your own, without needing the grind it all the way down and weld it all the way up, carrying components in multiple trips, and so on
- Allow upgraded blocks to not lose their upgrades due to being ground down. You can just move it around - no grinding necessary. Think special thrusters, Rare weapons, heavily upgraded batteries...
- Easily fix misplaced blocks
- Easily move blocks temporarily out of the way to access something
- Limits you to a single block in inventroy for realism reasons. Without a block slot, you would be able to store multiple complete blocks in inventory, which I dislike.
There should be a separate way to detach and even attach blocks, that leaves them in the game world instead of going to inventory, but that is not what this suggestion is about.
Feels OP?
- Slow down the detach and attach operations
- Limit character if block slot is occupied (less acceleration for example)
- Component requirement for detach operation (perhaps only large blocks)
