Block rotation resets too often

Unless you hold down the ctrl key while placing blocks, the rotation resets. Its painful for me to hold down the ctrl key for more than a second or two, so this makes building unplayable.
The default rotation is always wrong for what I'm doing, so I end up having to rotate every block I place. Its almost like blocks spawn upside down and backwards.
