Dampeners producing extra force

I was testing a ship with only downwards thrust in gravity. In the video attached, you see that with dampeners off, the thrust I had was not enough to overcome gravity. But with dampeners turned on, the ship can easily overcome gravity, as if there was some additional force.
I have not experienced this with ships that have thrust in all directions, like the sledge.
