There is a contract from Valadation Station where the first stage is to remove 3 containers from the proximity of the contract station. (I really cant remember the name of the contract and its gone now)
The requirement seems to be to remove these containers from the proximity of the station. So i lobbed one down to the nearby planetary body. Before removing all three, that stage of the contact completed (I was part way through getting the second out). A few minutes later the contract failed, possibly because the first one had now hit the planet.
It seems the requirement is not that the container is removed from proximity, rather it needs to carry on existing somewhere nearby?
I have the same bug
Hello gorgofdoom,
This behavior is intended for the moment due to current limitations (before settling for current behavior, grinding the containers would lock the Contract completely).
Easiest way to complete this first part of the Contract is to push the containers into space using your Character (which for me is the fastest way to complete it).
Please note that the Contracts mechanic is still early in its development and will be expanded upon in future Vertical Slices.
Thank you for your understanding.
Kind Regards,

I understand. I should have said more.
My suggestion is to change the mission prompt to specify the exact course of action. Instead of "move the containers out of proximity" perhaps "push them to within x meters of a place" and provide a marker for it.
The loss of guidance upon failure is a significant issue. To be clear, when i failed, the marker for vallation station did not reappear. I had to fly around for a while to find it again. I could not determine a way to re-enable the GPS marker for it.
Thanks for your time! i hope this helps.

I had the exact same problem, thinking that if those containers are in the way and they're busted, I might as well grind them down for resources. Reloaded the game and tried the contract again, this time making sure all the containers have indeed been moved out of range before grinding down; same result. Low priority, but it seemed strange that they care so much about some broken containers so I hope it'll get adjusted as contract mechanics mature.
The broader issue is that it would make logical sense for Vallation Station to have a permanent marker from the moment the player learns about it anyway (or perhaps teach the player how to place a marker?) since besides contracts, it's useful as a refueling/recharging point early on.

I had the same problem as well. I suggest not writing this off as a trivial matter. It's surely not intended for players to clear the landing area of the containers using their grinder, then have the contract disappear, along with the marker for the terminal, leaving us in an utterly broken state, unable to return home or do much anything else with contracts.
Perhaps a low effort thing you could do to help mitigate this clearly broken situation is to change the wording of the contract from "clear the landing area of containers" to "push the containers out of the landing area". Then you'd be in a better position to say that players are just being foolish for attempting to gather extra materials by clearing the landing area with a grinder.

Hello Engineers,
Thank you for your feedback.
The Vallation Station does not have a GPS marker per se, only a small antenna attached to the Contract block with approx. 10km of range. The GPS markers are specifically tied to the Contracts so that when one is failed, the markers disappear as the Contract is no longer active.
I will talk with our designers about this to find a balanced solution.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Regarding marking the station:
You can also set GPS points yourself. Press M and go to the GPS tab.
I learned this the hard way yesterday after flying around for hours trying to find the station again.
Here's a tip:
If you lose the station, it is marked on the sector map, but you cannot set a marker. However, the distance to the station is displayed, so you can determine the approximate direction and gradually approach the station. Thanks to the shields, it is also visible from quite a distance.
It took me a few hours yesterday after I was over 200 km away from the station. ^^
