Life on planets
Dear Keen,
First of all, your work has been incredible, and I can't be more excited to dive in. The planets are looking beautiful, and packed with things to explore.
If there was anything that could enhance the experience, it would be life. Creatures, animals, etc.
Even if they serve little role in general gameplay, the presence of life would greatly enrich the feeling of discovering new worlds, especially underwater.
Life on Earth is said to have begun in its oceans, so there's no better place to start.
Consider that scenery/terrain may be less visible underwater, and large areas of open, empty seas may eventually become boring to a player. What better way to provide intrigue than to fill the oceans with life, so that players can experience the contrast of a vibrant aquatic world in addition to the dark, empty depths below.
Creatures could be connected to gameplay in several ways. They could be captured in order to study/transport for missions, they could have/produce harvestable resources, and some of the more dangerous creatures could also pose as potential hazards to ships and players.
Space Engineers is one of the greatest games I have ever played, and it's sequel holds even more promise. With the addition of creatures to the already planned NPCs, SE2 could hold a much better sense of atmosphere and exploration while exploring a new system.
