SE2 Stops allowing placement

I'm having an issue where on the ship I am building, after some period of time or key presses, the game stops letting me place items. They still show up in the UI menu but they don't show in the view and I can't place them. All I can do is either start a NEW grid (which I won't do on the same ship) or save and then go out to the main menu and reload, which then seems to fix it.
