Something that always made me say wow when playing a very simple game like Minecraft was when I was mining to find some huge cavern with lava waterfalls etc. In SE I guess we do not have lava "yet", but maybe large underground water falls in that cave? or maybe the base we arrive at and need to repower, has some minimal combat, or some sort of puzzle to solve. And if this was not just a short idea, but something along the scale of Frostbite, or the Lost colony scenarios this would make it even better. To this end, at the point where it is "over" in the short version, have a choice to either end it and go to the "start point" or continue it as a much longer scenario which can then seamlessly convert into a real game playthrough. Anything that was built is still accessible; the story will continue with a full-length scenario which the player can continue.
Any time you either have a sudden reveal of a grand vista like the underground cave idea where suddenly and unexpectedly opens up into a nice view, or some sort of interactive process like combat or puzzle solving, can greatly draw the user in and make them take note. If this is a puzzle or combat however, it must not be so simple as to be seen as "Why bother?" but it also must not be so hard that the player will fail on their first attempt.
And lastly this scenario should give some bit of loot and maybe a steam achievement etc. to give the player a real sense of reward for taking the time to go through it. This will entice more players to do this and thus teach them the game, but even advanced players will do it, to obtain the loot item. This should be some sort of unique item only available by doing this tutorial/scenario, like the veteran suit in SE1. Since you did this in SE1 I assume you know exactly what I mean. However, I would make this item not just be a reskin of a vanilla item, but something truly unique. In the case of the Veteran suit if it had a 5% reduction to O2/H2 consumption or something. This sort of idea means there is real value and not just a cosmetic skin to be had. If this reward is an upgrade that will apply to any item of that type it is much better than just a new cosmetic item, which some players may feel cheated as it is something they do not like the look of and therefore will never use. So, in summary just an account wide unlock that will modify every suit the player uses, or modify every welder, or other tool etc.
