In SE1 manufacturing is based on general purpose fabricators, with increasing product range with more advanced machine. This changes with the introduction of the Prototech fabricator with limited but specialised part manufacture.
In SE2, advances on existing parts could be produced by machines that become less general with each advancement until the requirement would come for a single machine to produce a single part at the highest quality potentially available.
This would create the need for ever larger and complex facilities to keep the tech balances in check for the the advantages gained.
