Interactive ray shields?

Hello!
First of all, I love force field/ray- shields, imagine if there were interactive ray shields, they'd be able to contain oxygen and maybe be static, so that players could bump in to them. On planets or asteroids you'd be able to make an "oxygen containing atmosphere", in stead of building air-tight bases and such.
I just think that reinforcing base-and-ship building in this way would save so much time from building giant glass domes over bases.
