I wonder if we're ever gonna be allowed to place blocks next to each other like this, or is this just gonna be a limitation we'll have to live with?
Unified grid does not support diagonal blocks
Not a Bug
Currenty you can not place diagonal blocks in the free space of other diagonal blocks. Even if it fits perfectly.
I think this is a problem that must be addressed and fixed early in the development of SE2.
I have attached screeshots of the problem.

I don't think it's a bug (because the grid is made of cubes and a diagonal splits 2 parts of those cubes) but I would also really like that to be possible.

This is unfortunately a limitation of cubical grid. The sloped side of a block occupies half of the 25cm grid which in turn cannot be occupied by another block.
While there is nothing we can do without code change, there is a workaround in terms of mods such as this one created by Splitsie:
