Relative dampeners don't work

I could not manage to activate relative dampeners. Neither in a small ship flying next to it nor inside the big red ship. I was clicking shift Z like crazy, looking at different parts of the ship and nothing. Also an icon showing when the normal or relative dampeners are on (and not only that they are off) would be nice.

Ok, I tried it again after loading new game and they work (dunno what happened or changed). But my point about having an icon for them still stands.
