"You have died from collision"

VS 2.3 testing: Going through the new tutorial, I'm drilling for nickel by the barn. I find a deposit 70m down, so I nose down with jetpack on aiming at the signal and turn my drill on. I give it some gentle forward thrust to maintain contact with the drilled surface.
Suddenly, screed goes dark reading "You have died from collision". I respawn back at the escape pod and I can see the red skull icon marking my body and all its stuff slowly falling into the center of the planet as though my body fell into the void.
