The hand drill now picks up small amounts of surrounding material like stone or sand, so getting mixed ore is normal. The visual mining effects don’t always match the exact ore you receive, which can make it look inconsistent. If you’re mostly getting other materials with only traces of the ore’s color, that usually means you’ve reached the edge of the deposit.

Also, I have a related issue reported where it only tells you about the nickel you're picking up in this case, but doesn't tell you about the cobalt you're also picking up.
