Clipping inside an asteroid

I was mining into an asteroid to aquire a Nickel deposit when I hit a spot where I was was no longer able to mine. By this, I mean my hand held drill was not making contact with the asteroid wall. When I moved closer to the wall to see if I could find a spot to make contact, I clip through the asteroid. Screen shot is attached for reference.

I was able to make it to the Nickel deposit, but I needed to come at it from the opposite end of the asteroid.
