Game fails to launch

Mike Jones shared this bug 40 days ago
Need More Information

When I click "Play" in steam, the button changes to "Cancel", then "Stop" then 2 seconds later back to "Play". There is no indication on screen from the game at all and no audible indication of it running. I have not launched SE2 before.

The steam log folder is not present so no logs are created.

In Windows Event Viewer I see the following relating to the game...

Faulting application name: SpaceEngineers2.exe, version: 2.0.2.29, time stamp: 0x68d50000
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.19041.804, time stamp: 0x0e9c5eae
Exception code: 0xc0000602
Fault offset: 0x000000000010bd5c
Faulting process ID: 0x46b0
Faulting application start time: 0x01dc65c8bf21fd77
Faulting application path: F:\Games\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\SpaceEngineers2\Game2\SpaceEngineers2.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\System32\KERNELBASE.dll
Report ID: 9aa2af9b-7eb8-407f-a95f-868da8c2b6c5
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

Attempting to launch the game directly from the exe gives the same result, nothing happens.

My System:

  • Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2 build 19042.867
  • AMD Ryzen 9 5950X - standard clock speed
  • 32 Gb DDR4 3600
  • AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT - Drivers updated last night, standard clock speed
  • Motherboard Chipset X570
  • 2 Displays, both 1920x1080 with 100% scaling.

Hello Engineers,

The lack of Game logs is quite problematic, however, it may seem that some dependencies may be corrupted / missing.

Please try to reinstall .NET Framework from here: Download .NET 9.0 Desktop Runtime (v9.0.11) - Windows x64 Installer.

You can also try to install this older version: Download .NET Framework 4.8.1 | .NET9261d2d93bbe332d4cda23e512d19cd3

Let me know if this helps.

Kind Regards,

Bartosz

this has been an issue for several people here, myself included.

there have been several suggestions made but very little success from the people plagued with it.

it all started with VS2.

if i set the game to the beta version it will let me play, but somehow the beta is behind the live version as it did not have planets at all.

whatever is causing this issue with kernelbase.dll started with these updates and as developers only you can relay what calls the game is making for this .dll and why. and only you can see the differences between VS1 and VS2.

i hope its resolved, cause it looks like a nice update, but so far i cant.

photo
2

I hope this gets more attention.

We all want to play this game.

I had already tried, and I tried again now with that one, but it doesn't change, it tries to start but closes without giving any messages.

photo

No change (game still fails to launch) after the today's hotfix. Only if this info is relevant for problem tracking.

photo
1

Same here. I been trying to resolve this since the planets update with 0 luck.

photo
2

I have the exact same issue and additional information.

VS1 worked fine back when it released for me with the exact same setup. The machine is the same, its the same windows config that has been running. VS2 is having this silent instant crash issue with no logs being produced.

Attempting the usual fixes of validating files, clearing the appdata SE2 folder, disabling steam overlay, running as administrator etc. did not change the behavior.

No change (game still fails to launch) after the today's Obliviara patch.

Only if this info may help for problem tracking.

It's slowly turns annoying to suddenly not be able to play a game paid for......the steam refund conditions are longest passed.....

photo

Recently I played Derail Valley, Light up the town, Tainted Grail, Deadzone Rogue, Varthos, The last caretaker, Raodcraft, Monsters are coming, Mine Mogul. Everything I try is running except SE2.

FIX THIS CRAP ALREADY.

photo

It would be nice to have some feedback or attention about this issue, if its being looked into.

photo
3

I feel that the team may be looking into the issues that the active players have but I was only able to play the new update once on release and ever since I have not got past the launcher and many people are suffering the same issues. I feel keen would get a lot more done if EVERY player was giving them feedback on the game. And it obviously has to do with the update. please Fix I've had this problem for a while. and nothing has worked. Please at least acknowledge that there are some steps being made. and if anyone has had success fixing this please let everyone else know. logs below because i haven't submitted them yet.

Are you running Windows8? Hope you are aware that it hasn't got security updates in many years and could catch some nasty viruses if connected to internet.

Also I don't think Keen is interested in supporting EOL Windows OS's

2025-12-23 16:26:59.296 - Main Thread -> DirectX 12 renderer not supported on Windows 8.1 and lower. No renderer to revert back to.

There could be ways to start SE2 with DX11 by writing -dx11 as startup comment in Steam but I'd recommend that you update your Windows to 11 or go Linux

I too have the same issue - note issue also mentioned https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers2/pc/topic/52009-i-cant-launch-game-steam-version -

I have tried all the mentioned steps with no resolve nor change in behavior

I do have the related appcrash files if it helps the devs get to the bottom of this

photo

Those who still have this issue should add logs. Keen can't do much without them. They are found here:

C:\Users\**USERNAME**\AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers2\Temp\Logs\

photo
2

There are no game logs to share. The game crashes before it starts and generates no logs. The only information I have is from the event viewer log which was included in the report.

photo

Likewise the application crashes during DLL Loading and has not generated any logging at that point

  • Did you try reinstalling .NET 9 Desktop Runtime and .NET Framework 4.8.1 like Bartosz suggested?
  • Have you verified the gamefiles via Steam?
  • Does F: happen to be a spanned volume? Do you have some space on C: to move the gamefiles there temporarily and try?

I would suggest that you update to Win10 22H2. 20H2 hasn't been supported since 2023. There could be some compatibility issues.

22H2 also reached end of support in October 2025 but it's possible to enroll for an additional year of support via Windows update.

To those expressing anger and frustration at this issue, please understand this is an incredibly difficult issue to deal with, and this is very early access. Please be patient and understanding with the developers who have a lot of work to do and have to prioritise where they focus. This issue, while game breaking for us, seems to affect only a minority of users.

As far as I can tell this is a dependency issue, either direct dependency of the game or an indirect dependency through something else the game depends on. There's no stack trace or dependency heirachy shown so figuring this out will be very time consuming and difficult.

I am running quite an old release of Windows 10 for compatibility reasons with other things, maybe SE2 just isn't compatible with this old release of Windows, I don't know, it'll take a lot of testing and experimentation to figure it out. What we do know from other users is that SE2 worked before the last big update, and doesn't now, so one clue is what changed in the code and dependencies between versions, only Keen can know that, but again will take a lot of investigation, experimentation and time to figure it out. Also this is a crash in a core windows component further implying it could be an incompatibility with older Windows 10.

What we can do in the meantime is update our own systems if we can and report back what works and what doesn't. Does updating Windows 10 work? Does updating to Windows 11 work? Which versions of KernalBase.dll work and which don't. This will help zero in on the issue and expedite a fix.

Following up to this i have examined a crash dump from the application and gleaned this info from it hopefully something strikes a cause. If the devs wish to get the .dmp file i can send that to them.

You are running Win10 20H1 which is very old and hasn't gotten support since 2021. Try updating to 22H2 which gets support until autumn 2026 if you enroll to extended updates via Windows update. You should be able to update to 22H2 without enrolling, I think

photo
1

Some people including me prefer to stay on older win10 versions ( for obvious reasons )

All the newest games running on this version of windows without any problems.

SE2 is the only game in my entire library with more than 600 games that doesnt run.

photo
1

Just a friendly reminder that antiviruses won't protect those systems with unpatched security vulnerabilities in Windows. For that reason it's not recommended to connect to internet with systems running Windows 10 (older than 22H2), 8.1, 7, Vista and so on.

So it's more than just a preference.

Software developers also don't support end of life systems. It may run on them but don't expect to get support for your problems.

Valve will stop supporting Windows 10 at some point since the extended updates only covers until next autumn.

Here is Valve's warning for Windows 7/8/8.1.

https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4784-4F2B-1321-800A

photo
2

Still my choice to stay on this version and you can defend your point of view all day long the fact is all the brand new games are running perfectly on my system. except SE2

photo
1

Multiple people, not being able to start SE2, had older Win10 versions than 22H2. In case .NET 9, graphics drivers or DirectX 12 only works reliably with 22H2 it would be one less point on the troubleshooting list if users were on 22H2, and as a bonus their systems would be more secure.

Yes of course it's everyone's own choice, but I wonder what those "obvious reasons" are for not updating since I'm not aware that there would be many downsides for keeping Win10 up to date, apart maybe for some added telemetry, but those can be disabled with software.

OFF TOPIC

Personally I don't like where Microsoft is heading with Windows 11 so I switched to Linux. In case you stay on unsupported versions of Win10 then at least use MFA for every online account possible and avoid logging into your bank account or similar personal services from that system.

photo
1

At the moment Im waiting to see what win 12 is going to be like.

If I dont like it (probably wont) I will go with Steam OS which is also linux based if im not mistaken.

I been elbow deep in installing and maintaining windows systems since win 95 for personal and company use.

With win8 they started to shift towards the mentality of locking out users from many previously available options.

In the version im still running while it took me some research Im set the way I want it to be.

As long as everything works ( which it does with the only exception of SE2 ) I will keep running it.

I feel bad for people reporting crashes, frame drops and many other problems in new games on win11 while I have 0 issues and very stable.

You dont have to worrie about my security either but I appreciate you concerned.

photo
2

im also on the latest version of windows 10 and have not been able to launch the game since VS2

all the errors have kernelbase.dll as the culprit

photo
photo
2

I can say that with windows 10 22H2 it worked before VS2 and now after VS2 it doens't work any more.

The system was the same, no core component changed and match the minimal system requirements on steam.

So if this is really a windows issue due to the usage of newer OS functions after VS2, the minimal system requirements on steam have to be updated. Since steam refunds have a time limit and as mentioned it needs additional time to investigate without logs, too, I think the investigation of this issue needs a much higher priority.
