Large grid wiped if not in voxel

My understanding is a base wouldn't be wiped out from a public server if you had power, a beacon. Then I determined it had to be large grid after having small grid ship wiped (couldn't have been ground down, it was alone in deep space with lights off / beacon covered). Then I moved my large grid base to a ship, which had a beacon, and power with backup to last > 48 hours. After an 8-hour gap, I logged in again to find everything gone. So it appears it has to be planted into the voxel?
